PDP Reps Stage Walk Out After Their Member Defected To APC

Members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are protesting at the House of Representatives over the defection of Mr. Raphael Igbokwe to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Members of PDP walked out in protest after the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara read Igbokwe’s letter of defection to the house and allowed the defection to stand.

The Deputy Minority Leader of the House, Binta Bello, who raised a point of order after the defection, cited section 68 (1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution, insisting that the Igbokwe’s seat should be declared vacant.

But the Speaker ruled against her position after which the opposition lawmakers angrily walked out of plenary in protest.

They argued that rather ruling against their position, the Speaker ought to have called for an investigation into the provision of the Constitution on the matter.

Igbokwe, 45, joined the House in 2011 and he represents Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte local government in Imo state.

Igbokwe made know that he had joined the ruling party in January after discovering the leadership crisis in the opposition party. He added that he discontinued attending PDP meetings and functions both at the National and State level.

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, was also at the session to witness the defection.
